I pray you can help me. My father, now 80 and in failing health, never wanted to know until recently about his family origins. He has asked me to help him find whatever we can of his family origin before he dies.

My father did not know he was adopted until he was 25 years of age. While raised, his parents never kept in touch with family, so he has no knowledge or recollection of anyone other than the following:

Three weeks after he was born he was given by his mother to a cousin (Michael J. Martin of Milan, Missouri who was married to Gertrude Weyand). They raised my father under the name "Connett Sebastian MARTIN". The Martin's did not legally adopt my father until 5/7/1941. Milan is in Sullivan County.

My father's birth record was as follows:

Birth Name: Conrad Baby SMITH
Time of Birth: 5/20/16 at 2:30am
Place of Birth: Ensworth Hospital, St. Joseph, Missouri
Mother: Margaret (Maggie) Smith

age: 38
prior children: None
Employment: Housemaid
Origin of Birth: Iowa
Father: Unknown

In April or May of 1941, she was age 63, and living with her sister (name unknown) who was married to a King (a man who had one arm and worked for the Burlington Railroad out of St. Joseph).

My father was raised by his cousin Michael James Martin who had a brother William and three sisters; Catherine, Ann, Marie. One of the sisters was married to a Michael Laughlin who lived in Missouri (possibly Milan or St. Joseph). My father was raised at 215 Pearl St in Milan, Missouri.

Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Shari Martin Menard
