REGISTRY OF GRAVES:

What follows is a directory to graves of Post #274, Unit #274, and other veterans buried in local area cemeteries. These are NOT all the cemeteries in this locality! They represent the ones that were shown by Post #274 minutes to be the ones traditionally decorated on Memorial Day by THIS post. This is a history of Post #274 and Unit #274 and NOT an attempt at showing ALL veterans of wars from this area. However, it might seem to be that. Note that we have included veterans of wars (including one from the War of 1812) whose graves have been found in these selected cemeteries. We also have a section in this history which identifies those who died while on active duty. This is meant to acknowledge the sacrifice made by families of this community. These are the men who did not live to become veterans and members of ANY American Legion post. One can easily confuse our purpose and limitations in the following information. This was not intended as a history of all veterans from this area nor a directory to ALL graves of veterans. Only as the post minutes specified a cemetery name was it included in our search for graves.

Minutes of Claude Myers Post #274 showed the names of the cemeteries in the Browning area which were decorated, annually, with American flags at the grave of each veteran. In 1967 this marking-all-graves-with-a-flag practice ended. Instead, the post began installing flag poles at each of these cemeteries and a single, large flag was hoisted each Memorial Day. Various reasons are given by those who remember this change in practice: Vandals took or scattered flags; the men who knew where all the graves were had died; etc. As part of a special Memorial Day 1993 commemoration, small American flags were placed at EVERY grave of a veteran (of ANY war), including all post members. Auxiliary unit members' graves were marked that way, too. In preparation for this special-event, the cemeteries were visited and the location of graves was noted. A code was used to identify the location of each grave to be flag-marked. If the gravestone was a military stone an "m" was marked down; if it was a civilian stone a "c" was used as a code. And, if any special veteran-denoting marker was found, it was recorded as "l" for American Legion bronze marker, "a" for Legion Auxiliary bronze marker, or "vfw", "ww1", etc. for any other-marker found.

In the early 1950's a bronze legion marker cost about $5; in 1992 the cost of one had risen to $16. Many post members and auxiliary unit graves lack such markers. The cost of putting such markers where they might memorialize a post or unit member's grave would, now, be prohibitive. At its October 1993 meetings, Post and Unit #274 approved this policy concerning the bronze grave markers: If an ACTIVE member of the post or unit is buried in a local cemetery, part of the Legion's funeral service would include an offer to the family of a bronze marker. If the family of the deceased requests such a marker within 60 days of the burial, the post (or unit) will provide the marker at no cost to the family. If the request is beyond these 60 days, the post or unit will provide the marker at the family's cost. Many may find the following listing of cemeteries useful in deciding to put Legion and/or Auxiliary markers by graves we have identified as "p" or "u" (members of THIS post and unit).

When available, obituaries were checked for spelling of names and birth and death dates. For this project, when a gravestone was found which had alternate spelling or dates, the information on the stone was entered in the listing. It was thought that that would assist in locating the specific stone for marking with a flag. It should be noted that in many cases, both a military stone and a civilian stone for the same person will be found (the civilian stone often includes a spouse or other family member).

Included here are...

... Post-member graves locator-marked ......................: 131

... Unit-member graves locator-marked ......................: 44

... Veterans (other than post members) locator-marked ......: 192

... Died on active duty (or killed in action) locator-marked: 19

... Number of located graves having American Legion markers : 59

... Number of located graves having Auxiliary Unit markers : 21

Codes used:

p=post member of Post #274 ======================================

u=unit member of Unit #274

v=a veteran but was not a member of this post | nw | ne || nw | ne |

|========|======== ========|========|

[ ] also contains grave-location information:

[ ne/nw ml ] means there is a military headstone | nw | ne || nw | ne |

and a legion marker at a grave which is in the northeast

quarter of the northwest quarter of this cemetery (ne of nw). |------- sw ------||------- se ------|

No matter what size or shape of cemetery is involved, you

find its middle (using its fences or other bounds as its | sw | se || sw | se |

edges... including future-grave space)! Get a fix on that

cemetery-middle and find North. Define the four quarters of ======================================

the cemetery: nw, ne, sw, and se quarters. Within EACH quarter

there is another middle point. Fix THAT point in your mind.

Now, every grave can be located. Which quarter of a quarter

is it in? Which quarter of the cemetery is that in?

LOCAL AREA MEN AND WOMEN WHO DIED

WHILE ON ACTIVE DUTY:

A number of servicemen (including one woman) died while on active duty in the armed forces. They didn't become veterans -- they didn't come back. Some died in action. Several are memorialized in local cemeteries. Some bodies were shipped back to be buried here. They made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country:
