Surnames: CHILDERS/CHILDRESS HILL DAVIS

Date: 06 Jun 1999
My grandfather, John Edward CHILDERS (CHILDRESS), I have legal documents showing John signed his name both ways, was born 14 May, 1872 at Green Castle, Sullivan, MO. Have never known his parents' names. Only information available until recently was that his father was "wounded in war" and died in 1872. Recently received information I believe to show my grandfathers family. It came from Probate records of Putnam Co., MO 1845 to 1909, and listed "CHILDERS minors...Children of father dec'd and Mother now wf. of C.C. DAVIS. Income from their fathers pension who survived in Army during Civil War. William B CHILDERS born 23 Nov 1867; Joel CHILDERS born 23 May 1869, Anna CHILDERS born 23 May 1869 (twins), and John Childers born 14 May 1872. (There may also have been another sister who died at age 18 of typhoid), C. C. DAVIS appointed guardian." My grandfather John married Emma Hill in Unionville, Putnam Co, MO. on 23 June 1894. At some point after that they moved to Iola, Allen Co., KS. Emma died in 1906, they had a son Virgil Victor who was sent back to MO to live with Emma's family. John married Ethel Alice Gantt in Iola in 1910. Their children were Harold Eugene (my father) and John Samuel (Jack). Back in the late 1960's when I first began genealogy I was given a piece of information I could not connect, but now know that William married and had children born in Sullivan Co. Does anyone have information to share. Also recently learned from my mother that John Edward also had a relative, cousin or aunt who lived in Iola. She never knew the relative's name. I would love to learn more about the Childers family. Can anyone help. Thanks for sharing.
