DEEDS CEMETERY LISTING:
I would like anyone to contact me if they have a relative in this cemetery so that I can record it or pick their brain for the book.  I have pretty extensive geneaologies for a lot of these people.  (Information provided by Marsha Sears)

HISTORY:  According to what records are available, the DEEDS Family Cemetery was founded in August of 1854 when Mary A. Deeds, the four-month-old daughter of Lewis Napoleon Bonaparte “Bony” Deeds and Sarah Newman Deeds was buried.  Her final resting spot was on land owned by her father and John George Deeds, her grandfather.  John George came to Missouri in 1850 and purchased the land in 1851 with his son “Bony” Deeds.  “Bony” died during the Civil War in Corinth, Mississippi.  He is buried there in the National Cemetery.

John George Deeds was born Johann Jorg Dietz on June 22, 1784 in Pennsylvania.  He was the second son of Johannes and Anna Magaretha Forstern Dietz.  He changed his name to the more “American” version around 1800.  He lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Fairfield Co., Ohio; Delaware Co., IN; Macon Co., IL; Moultrie Co., IL and finally settled in Sullivan Co., MO around 1850.  He lived there until his death on November 15, 1878.

Most of those buried in the Deeds Cemetery had some sort of family tie to John George Deeds, especially those buried prior to his death in 1878.  However, there are some who remain a mystery and may have just belonged to families who were close friends or neighbors to the Deeds.

We have discovered that several of the families represented in this cemetery were also early settlers of Moultrie and Shelby Counties in Illinois.  It is merely a guess, but we believe these families relocated together to Missouri.  The surnames that also appear in Illinois are:  DEEDS (DIETZ), HOSTETTER (HOSTETLER), WAGGONER (WAGNER), PORTER, PROVOLT, WILLBORN (WILBERN, WILBORN), BONE (BONEY), DITTO, MILLER, ROOKS, WALDECK (WEDICK), NEWMAN (NEWLAND), DOUGHERTY (DAUGHERTY) and others.  There were also similar families in Switzerland Co., Indiana.

LOCATION:  The cemetery is located behind the Liberty Union Baptist Church, north of Milan, Missouri.  The easiest way by black top is to go west on Highway 136 out of Unionville, turn left on EE, wind through the country a ways until you see BB, and turn left.  Drive (quite a ways) until you see the “Liberty Union Baptist Church” sign and turn left on gravel.  The church is just down the road on the left side.  The cemetery is directly behind the church and has the name clearly stated on its gate.  It is located on a hill, with a slightly rough climb to it.  If you have difficulty with hills, we suggest not going alone.
